Thanksgiving is gone…Enter Christmas!

28 Nov

Christmas time is here! Does anyone else agree that time moves so much faster once you are an adult?! I can’t figure out what happened to August through November…

Every year we gather for Thanksgiving with my mom’s side of the family. When I was little I would alway boss my cousins around and create some sort of “Thanksgiving program” to perform in front of our entire extended family (about 40 people). We would alway make Turkeys out of apples and gumdrops. Now that I am an adult, it’s so weird to me that MY children are now the little hams  turkeys at the family functions!!

Exit Thanksgiving:

Henley’s Turkey (with help from Auntie Kendall)

The newest kids at the “Kid table.”

Hoke eating her feast! She eats more than any child I know! Sidenote- My aunt served my children their lunch in foil dishes! She saw it on pinterest, and it was a great idea!

My aunt Lisa and Henley on an “acorn hunt.” Henley and Hoke loved searching for acorns in her yard!

Enter Christmas:

Today while the girls were at school, Jarrod and I got the Christmas tree set up! We are still working on getting  the rest of the house ready, but here’s what we have so far…

My adorable burlap Santa Clause. I bought him at  the store Trinity in Athen, AL.

Weekend Cooking-Beer Cheese Soup

27 Nov

Well, this is going to do nothing for my figure, but it sure does provide some comfort! I’ve made this soup twice in the last couple of weeks, and we eat on it for days! After  researching and discarding tons of recipes for Beer Cheese Soup, this is the one that I decided to make. I found it on AllRecipes.com, and it’s a winner! I like to serve this with slices of Whole Foods Rosemary Garlic bread…to. die. for.

Enjoy!

Wisconsin Native’s Beer Cheese Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups diced carrots
  • 1 1/2 cups diced onion
  • 1 1/2 cups diced celery
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups beer
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 4 cups milk or half and half
  • 6 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • popped popcorn, for garnish

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, stir together carrots, onion, celery, and garlic. Stir in hot pepper sauce, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Pour in chicken broth and beer; simmer until vegetables are tender, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. Meanwhile, heat butter in a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Stir in flour with a wire whisk; cook, stirring until the flour is light brown, about 3 or 4 minutes. Gradually stir in milk, whisking to prevent scorching, until thickened. Remove from heat, and gradually stir in cheese. Keep warm.
  3. Stir beer mixture into cheese mixture. Stir in Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and dry mustard. Adjust for hot pepper sauce. Bring to a simmer, and cook 10 minutes. Serve topped with popcorn.

Coming up Roses

27 Nov

I usually consider myself to be a “lavender” girl. The scent of lavender makes me feel relaxed and rejuvenated. However, I just realized that I have a lot of love for roses too!

Rosebud Perfume Co. Smith's Rosebud Salve

I can’t live without my Rosebud salve. At any given time there are three or four containers scattered around my house and in my purses. I use it on my lips and cuticles. Once I was in a jam, and I even used it for my daughter’s diaper rash!  Rosebud salve has been a staple in my life since college when my dear sweet friend E.Boone introduced it to me!  Right now it can be found on drugstore.com for only $5.59.

Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Organic Aloe Vera Formula Toner

Speaking of E.Boone (who happens to be a beauty editor at a well known magazine…), while in college she also introduced me to using Witch Hazel as an astringent. We both were using Dickinson’s which has kind of a weird campfire smell. After becoming used to it, I loved it!  About six months ago I started wearing Thayer’s alcohol free Rose Petal Witch Hazel, and I am IN LOVE! It smells so luxurious and just like fresh roses. Since there is no alcohol in it, it makes my skin feel clean and moisturized! I usually buy it at Whole Foods for about $9.99 a bottle, but I just found it on drugstore.com on sale for $7.99!

Milk & Rose Shampoo

I was inspired to write this post while perusing the internet.  I came across this fresh Milk and Rose shampoo on Sephora.com and I was suddenly intrigued! (It was then that I realized maybe I am a rose girl too) Has anyone tried it? I have a ton of J. Beverly Hills Shampoo and Conditioner right now, but I could be persuaded…
